Introduction to Digg

Digg, a social bookmarking site, is extremely popular with Internet marketers and website owners nowadays. If you doubt me, then pray tell why they are ranked #160 on Alexa at the time of writing. Thing is ... if used correctly can send thousands to your website virtually overnight.

Basically, this is how Digg works. You register with the site and get approved. Registered users like you then submit “Digg” worthy content. Short summaries of the news item is written about the content. Oh and you can submit nearly anything to Digg (e.g articles, videos, stories, blog entries, funny pictures, you name it).

Here's what essentially happens after that. Members of the Digg community can then see your link on the respective categories and if they fancy your content, they will "digg" your story. A “Digg” is actually a vote for the content submitted. Submitted content with the highest number of “Diggs” make it to the front page of Digg. Stories can also be “buried” which will send them shooting down to rankings at Digg. Digg stories are kept in the up and coming section for around 12 – 24 hours. If the story does receive enough “Diggs” it is then sent to the Digg homepage. If the story starts to get “buried” it will automatically disappear.

Writing a good story that gets a number of Diggs, and by number I mean a few hundred can produce tens of thousands of page views which will mean thousands of visitors and potential customers to your websites.

To have any chance of making to the top spot, you need to produce a really popular story that will help people (oh btw, writing about Digg itself is a very popular subject and frequently makes it onto the top spot).

Digg is a form of social bookmarking and viral marketing, done right and your site will do incredibly well, get it wrong and nothing will happen. Many people use this as a way of gaining backlinks to their site as well. Have fun digging!
